Ear Training that Frees Your Instrument

Stop the drills. You can name the interval but your fingers are lost. Jazz legends practiced melodic shapes on their instruments, in every key — the way neuroscience says musical shapes are retained and automated — melodic cells, not intervals nobody plays. We train the way samurai drilled forms — until your hands move themselves. Grab your horn.

A samurai playing the saxophone — Samurai Sounds

Why It Works

Classical ear training is the slowest way to learn to play by ear. Jazz legends have known the secret for decades, scientists have proven jazz ear training techniques work, and yet … tradition prevails. The Samurai Sounds method rewires how you hear — in every key — the way your brain builds languages and skills. Nobody else trains playable melodic shapes for transfer to the instrument — but that is the jazz legends’ method in a snapshot. It’s our very cornerstone.

Hear the shape, not the note

You learn 3- and 4-note cells as shapes and drill them through all 12 keys, so your ear maps the whole fretboard/keyboard/horn at once.

High-variability practice

All-keys, all-orderings practice is exactly the "desirable difficulty" research shows makes skill transfer — harder to hold, far harder to forget.

The sword draws itself

Reps move the work from your thinking brain into short-term memory; testing exercises then transfer it to your automatic brain — until you hear a line and your fingers find it without hunting.

How It All Works

Classic interval drills are like speaking one letter at a time. Letters have function, but we learned to speak in phrases in context, not letters. Every cell here is a real phrase of melodic language, a shape already living inside your favorite songs.Songs you already know start with these cells. After playing a cell, try these by ear — they open with the same shape. Mi Re Do — Three Blind Mice, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Do You Hear the People Sing. Do Re Mi — The Little Drummer Boy. Do Re Mi Sol — a Lord of the Rings theme.

Run that shape through twelve keys and you stop hearing individual notes and begin recognizing famous melodic phrases. The game walks you up the levels: first you steer, then the keys move on their own and you follow, then the order stops being predictable. Underneath it all, shifting ground — the same shape keeps landing over changing chords, so it never welds to one. Hide every note but the first and you pull the rest out of silence — that unconfident reach is the exact moment you start retaining the melody. A dojo, not a drill sheet.

Every cell, every detail behind the game stands on peer-reviewed research and where the evidence is thin, we say so loud and clear in our guides. It’s the only ear training method that transfers to your instrument. The free game is the doorway; the cornerstone guide is Sensei’s 9 Training Habits.

How to Know It’s Working

The sword draws itself. You hear a line — on a record, in your head, from the player beside you — and your fingers answer before you think. The change comes in small bursts at first, torrents later.

No interval tests. You’ll have “aha” moments instead. You play a cell clean in a key you never drilled. Someone counts off a tune in an unfamiliar key and the shape is already under your hand. A phrase you practiced walks into your solo, uninvited. That’s the method landing — not on the page, on the bandstand.

Why I Built This

Drew Briney playing tenor saxophone

In music school, I practiced up to 11 hours a day, six days a week. I toured Europe with a premier jazz band and toured Asia as a soloist with a symphony — and still struggled to play what I was hearing.

It wasn't until I dove into neuroscience that I learned the hard truth: classical ear training is the slowest, least efficient way to learn to play by ear. So I turned to neuroscience, jazz legends, and samurai training methods to build the fastest, most efficient path — one that translates ear training into real music, on whatever instrument you play.

Notation Packs

Prefer paper? The full 12×12 workout, written out — so you can woodshed without the app. Zero overlap between packs: you never pay twice for a cell.

Your clef:

Every pack includes all three clefs in one purchase — pick the clef you read; treble, alto and bass are all in the download.

A note on the counts: the paper packs group La Do Fa with the pentatonic cells, the app groups it with the diatonic ones, so a family count here can differ by one cell from the same family in the game.
